Client Details

The Islamic Institute of Toronto (IIT) is a non-profit educational institution located in Scarborough, Toronto. For more than 25 years, they’ve been serving the Muslim community in Toronto by providing educational and recreational programs for adults and youth.

Project Goal

The IIT was using an outdated HTML and CSS based website and was in need of a revamp in terms of design, and setup. With their audience growing rapidly, they needed to upgrade their website to better suit their needs. The objective of this project was to utilize WordPress to redesign and develop a brand new website by which the IIT could be more engaging with their community. Implementing an online donation system and a platform for community news, announcements, and events was of utmost importance.

Project Details

The website that I designed for the Islamic Institute of Toronto (IIT) was the very first WordPress project and one that I’m very proud of. At present, the IIT has entrusted me with handling all aspects of their website’s design and function.

It was while working on the IIT’s website that I found my niche and value that I felt I could offer to the world.

Home Page Design

I started this website project by first designing the home page to include the following

  1. A banner that highlights some of the key services they are providing at a given time
  2. The latest news and announcements that the mosque makes for the community
  3. The prayer times, including the Friday prayer schedule
  4. A YouTube embed that connects to their YouTube channel during livestreams
  5. Links to their donation page

The home page is designed to prioritize community engagement by keeping the community well informed of the mosque’s plans, programs, and events. Before the COVID-19 pandemic that rattled the world in 2020, the prayer times and Friday prayer schedule were especially useful for the community. With the pandemic behind us, it is finally being used again. The embedded YouTube video was especially useful during the pandemic to follow the IIT’s online programs as they strived to engage their community remotely.

Donation Page Design

The donation page is one of the most important pages that the IIT required. It is one of their primary means by which they collect funds and donations from the community to support all their overhead, operational costs, programs, and events.

The donation page uses a plugin called GiveWP to enable donation collections on the backend of the website through forms that are displayed on the frontend. There is a free and premium version of the plugin that can be considered and this site uses the premium version.

Facility Rental Page

The facility rental page is a booking form built using a plugin called Gravity Forms by which community members can submit requests to book various spaces at the IIT facility.

Conclusion

The experience that I gained by building this WordPress website is invaluable. Being the first website I built on WordPress and the first opportunity, it will forever remain very special for me. Learning how to use plugins, themes, form builders, page builders, and more are skills that I carry with me even today.
